Denver, Colorado may be known as the Mile High City but it could also be known as the Green Mile High City. Though they are a fairly big city, they are doing what they can to stay as environmentally friendly as possible. Denver is known for its great outdoors with its crisp fresh air. The people living there care to keep it that way. Because of that, they take being ‘green’ seriously.

There are some major eco-friendly things you may notice next time you visit. Even when you first arrive at the airport, you will be surrounded by energy saving technology. The Denver International Airport is in the process of replacing computers and flight monitors to ones that require less heat and that will ultimately use up less energy. Denver’s airport also recycles more than 19 different types of materials regularly. When hailing a taxi in Denver, you may be surprised to be picked up in a hybrid-electric Prius. The largest taxi service in Denver has decided convert their whole fleet of vehicles to hybrids. Who wants to go to the Mile High City, known for its clean blue skies only to be surrounded by smelly, polluting taxicabs? When riding around in your hybrid taxi, you may be surprised to see many people walking or riding scooters in Denver. Walking is obviously great for your health and for the environment. Scooters are popular because of their being inexpensive on gas as well as being more eco-friendly than regular vehicles. There are also scooters that are gas free, making them very eco-friendly. Driving around Denver you may also notice a lot of trees. In 2006, the Mayor announced that he was going to work towards a goal of adding one million trees in the Denver area by 2025. This project has been helping reduce the greenhouse gases in Denver since it started in 2006. Denver residents are also great with recycling. City workers collect tons upon tons of recyclable materials per year. Denver’s recycling program is one of the cities most successful of all of their environmental programs.

So next time you visit Denver, Colorado try to watch out for all of these environmentally friendly programs and technologies. Maybe even try to be more aware of your actions and how they may affect the city while you are there. You will be able to better appreciate the work they do to keep the Mile High City as clean and beautiful as ever.
