How To Find The Best Housing Options For Newlywed Couples

When my spouse and I tied the knot, we were completely at a loss as to what kind of home to look for in order to get comfortably settled into our new life together. We knew that because of where we lived, our options were fairly restricted to a few types of apartments, but outside of that, we were clueless.

If you are preparing to get married and have not previously lived together as a couple, you may wonder what kind of options are before you as well.

Choosing the right place to start off together is crucial, but it sometimes gets lost in the stress of planning the wedding itself. So, slow down for a few days and focus on this aspect of your future.

Your opportunities are going to be heavily based upon the region in which you live. For example, a modular home in NY might be worth considering and comparing to other types of homes, while you will probably be thinking about different apartments or condos if you live in southern CA.

But it is very important to keep your eyes peeled at all times for “out of the ordinary” opportunities. When my spouse and I were searching, we found a two-bedroom guesthouse close to work and school that was being leased for less than the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment.

Yet because we weren’t quick enough, it was snapped up before we could even contact the potential landlord. This goes to show that you CAN find excellent living quarters for the right price–you just have to know where to look.

So, make it a habit to constantly pick up city and regional newspapers, college newspapers, and area housing guides. Take time each day–even if it’s only a few minutes–to search online classifieds. You might even make a special e-mail account in order to keep track of your internet-based exchanges.

Make sure you are constantly putting away money for your newlywed nest. You may not accumulate a down payment for a new home, but you don’t want to miss out on an apartment or condominium you love because you cannot pay the deposit and/or first month’s rent.

These are expenses that young people often overlook when they are first striking out together, so don’t make that mistake.

When you go to investigate a property of any kind, go armed with plenty of questions. It is the job of office managers, landlords, and real estate agents to sell to you, so it will be up to you to find the faults of any given residential space. Ask tenants and read reviews online.

This is a big choice, but don’t be intimidated. Instead, devote the time to finding your first time that such a decision deserves.
